Good Fat vs Bad Fat!

Did you know that fat is actually very good for you? Well monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats anyway!

Fat is essential for optimal brain function - which makes sense seeing as our brain is made up of 60% fat! It also helps our body to absorb, transport and utilise the non water soluble vitamins A, D, E and K (which are crucial for brain function!)

Fat is also a fantastic source of energy too; with 9 calories per gram compared to the 4 cals per gram for carbs and proteins! So not only will it sustain your energy level for longer, it will also help you to eat less as it keeps the body feeling satisfied!

Now I mentioned the words monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats; when combined with a healthy balanced diet, these good fats help to keep our cholesterol levels down and keep our hearts healthy! Some examples of mono and poly fats are: avocados, olives, almonds, peanuts, cashews, coconut oil, sunflower oil and oily fish such as salmon!

The fats to avoid are the trans fats or hydrogenated! These tend to be found in heavily processed foods so give them a miss!
